The roots of Feng Shui (風水 - literally, "wind and water") is the Chinese doctrine of creating spaces in harmony with their surroundings.
For example, the principles of Feng Shui can be taken into account in interior design, house architecture, and landscaping. The room design is based on various rules, which are to ensure that so-called unwanted energies can not settle in these rooms. For example, hard edges are avoided and attention is generally paid to symmetrical arrangements.
An important role is also played by the elements of the five-element doctrine and their charisma and balance. Feng Shui is still very common in modern China and virtually every major construction project is being advised by a Feng Shui master.
From a scientific point of view, the idea of an energy (chi) that can be guided by the spatial arrangement of furniture or house architecture and either provides or avoids prosperity and happiness is a superstition. Nevertheless, Feng Shui contains comprehensible aspects of harmony: People generally do not like to sit with their backs to the door. But neither Feng Shui nor Chi is necessary for these findings.
